Katy Hansen

You are here:

Katy has enjoyed teaching music to all ages for the last 8 years. She is extremely
versatile in her knowledge and ability to teach many different instruments and styles of
music. Her music training began with classical piano at age 6. As she progressed she
learned jazz/rhythm guitar, flute, viola, bass guitar, ukulele and opera/music
theater/commercial voice. Aside from participating in her school’s band, orchestra,
and choir programs, Katy sought out further performance opportunities.
Katy began performing in musical theater productions at the age of 10, procuring quite
a few lead roles in her teens and early twenties. Since the age of 13 she has also
performed in and managed many rock bands around Kansas City, Milwaukee, and
Chicago. While obtaining her Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Composition from
Carthage College she began performing in a few Operas as well.
Even though her degree was in Music Composition, Katy’s primary instrument of study
was Voice. She trained in all styles of vocal performance, vocal pedagogy, and was
even granted research money to do undergraduate research in the Vocal Sciences.
She presented her research at many Vocal Science conferences including the 6th
Annual International Conference on the Physiology and Acoustics of singing. Katy
was the first and only undergraduate to be selected to present her research there.
Shortly after presenting she was also selected to study in Paris, France.
Since beginning her teaching career 8 years ago, Katy has continued to write music
and perform in bands around the Chicago area. This experience has given her the
opportunity to direct several programs that teach all ages how to work together and
perform in pop/rock bands. Her experience and passion for songwriting also led her to
originate and direct an Artist Development Program. This program teaches young
artists how to write/produce their own music and market their own work. She has
been directing these programs in the Barrington area for the last 4 years and would
love to bring similar opportunities to Cary through Victory Voice!
